Michael Corbett Shannon, born August 7, 1974 in Lexington, Kentucky, is an American stage and film actor. His mother, Geraldine Hine, is a lawyer, and his father, Donald S. Shannon, was an accounting professor at DePaul University; his grandfather is entomologist Raymond Corbett Shannon. He was raised by his divorced parents in both Kentucky and Chicago, Illinois. Shannon portrays Doc Cross Williams in the upcoming film "Jonah Hex."


Shannon began his career in Chicago as a stage actor, where he helped to found the Red Orchid Theatre. He has since worked with Northlight Theatre, and Steppenwolf Theatre Company, among other acting companies. In 2004, Shannon originated the role of Peter Evans in "Bug," and also starred in the film adaptation with Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. in 2007. His roles in "Bug," "Man From Nebraska," and "Killer Joe" were written by Steppenwolf ensemble member Tracy Letts.

Shannon made his film debut in 1993 with a small role in "Groundhog Day" as a professional wrestling-obsessed wedding groom who, along with his new bride, receive Wrestlemania tickets from Bill Murray's character. Later, he had roles in "8 Mile," "Jesus' Son," "Pearl Harbor," "Vanilla Sky," and as the villain in "Kangaroo Jack." After a small part in "Bad Boys II," he had a major role in "Grand Theft Parsons" as the hippie, Larry Oster-burg. He played the leader of a prison white supremacist group, Lynard, in the 2006 film "Let's Go to Prison," and gambler Ray Zumbro in 2007's "Lucky You." His role as John Givings in the 2008 film "Revolutionary Road," also starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio, earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

In 2010 Shannon played band manager Kim Fowley in "The Runaways," and will appear later in the year in the upcoming films "13," as Henry, and "Jonah Hex" as Doc Cross Williams.
